How to get rid of a couch in Toronto
City pickup, donation or paid removal: the right choice depends on the couch's condition, who can carry it out and how soon it needs to go.

Check removal options1. Check City of Toronto collection first
For homes receiving City collection, furniture is among the oversized items collected beside the garbage bin on garbage day. The service is funded through an annual fee; it is not an extra private-hauler booking.
The City asks for 0.5 metres of space between items and says sofa-bed frames should be tied down so they cannot spring open. Follow the current oversized-item and set-out instructions before putting anything out.
This option works best when you can safely arrange the carry-out and wait for collection. Plan the route before moving a heavy couch. If stairs or lifting make that impractical, ask for help before moving it.
Apartments and condos
Ask your building manager where bulky items go and when they can be left there. Buildings using private collection do not receive City oversized-item collection. Check the City's building-collection guidance and your building's arrangements.
2. See whether the couch can be reused
If you would be comfortable offering it to someone you know, reuse may be worth trying. Take clear photos of the cushions, frame and any wear. Include dimensions, whether it reclines or opens into a bed, and the pickup floor.
Habitat ReStore GTA's donation page lists furniture among accepted categories, subject to condition, age and available space. Its exclusions include sofa beds and damaged or excessively stained items. Acceptance is not guaranteed.
ReStore GTA distinguishes curbside/loading-bay pickup from paid in-home pickup. Ask them to confirm your eligibility, item acceptance, pickup location and any fee. Do not assume that all charity pickups include carrying a couch down stairs.
You can also offer a usable couch directly to someone who needs it. Agree on a collection window and who will do the lifting. Keep a backup plan if your move-out date is close.
Gone By Noon is not affiliated with Habitat ReStore GTA. A removal booking does not guarantee donation or a charitable receipt.
3. Arrange paid removal when you need the carry-out handled
Paid removal can make sense for a basement couch, a heavy recliner, several unwanted pieces or a deadline that does not fit your collection schedule. The access route and lifting requirements matter as much as the space an item takes in a truck.
Gone By Noon arranges furniture removal in Toronto and the GTA. Small, straightforward pickups start at $159. A sofa bed, stairs, dismantling or additional items can change the quote. We confirm the scope, price and pickup availability before booking.
For a larger clearout, see our garage cleanout and estate cleanout services. Tell us which items must stay and who can authorize removal.
What to send for a useful removal quote
- A photo of the entire couch and every other item you want removed.
- Whether it is a sofa bed, recliner or sectional, plus approximate dimensions.
- The pickup address, floor, stairs and any narrow doors or turns.
- Elevator reservations, loading-bay access and parking instructions.
- Your preferred date, deadline and whether dismantling is needed.
Mention pests, contamination or other special conditions before requesting a pickup. Do not book ordinary furniture removal for a job that needs specialist handling without discussing it first.
Common questions
- Do I have to hire someone to remove my couch?
- Not always. Eligible City collection or a confirmed reuse arrangement may work. Paid removal is an option when you need help with lifting, access or timing.
- Can a sofa bed be donated?
- Check with the recipient first. Habitat ReStore GTA currently lists sofa beds among items it does not accept. An ordinary sofa and a sofa bed are not interchangeable when asking for a donation pickup.
- Can Gone By Noon come today?
- Ask us to check the address, load and crew schedule. Same-day pickup may be available; a quote request does not reserve a time.
Need help getting it out?
Tell us what needs to go and how we can access it. We'll review the job and confirm a quote and available pickup time.
